I saw Ellroy at an event in London - promoting 'Perfidia', I think - and it's the most memorable author talk I've ever been to. He didn't speak for at least a minute in answer to the interviewer's questions, just nodded vigorously - to the point where I thought he was a mute. But when he did start talking it was extraordinary: shocking, dirty and hilarious. I got my copy of 'White Jazz' signed afterwards, which I still treasure.
