Understanding Albion's Seed is key to understanding the regional differences in America that persist to today. (There's tons of interesting things out there including large scale population genetics).

It is fascinating the way culture/genetics carry across the water. Watching an Irish show/movie and noticing that's how "we" speak (mostly around taking the Lord's name in vain).

I loved Winter's Bone.

„clannish, violent, economically poor but culturally rich“ - I think most immigrants are a bit this way, also today. It is only natural to cling together with your kind when you are new to a foreign country. Leaving your home to make a new start also means fighting for your place and your chance in the new surroundings. When today politicians and extremist parties are blaming immigrants they should look at these historical developments. This is not new. Within some generations the big melting pot does its work. As you point out, culture-wise societies mostly benefit from immigration as the mix produces rich new ideas.

Albion's Seed is one of those great books that bears a re-reading, despite its length

Its a hard one to recommend to people because no one will believe you that it's actually incredibly entertaining, but it is...
